A Week In The Life Of A Recruitment Consultant At Anderson Hoare
Welcome to 'A week in the life of...' where we expose what day to day life is really like in different job roles and industries. In each article we'll be asking a cross-section of our clients and candidates, as well as our team members, what their job is really like. Looking at the highs and the lows, the office lols and the work dramas.
Our aim is to lift the lid on the reality of different job roles, there's no try before you buy when job hunting so we're here to help you to get a feel for what a role you know nothing about might be like.
This week we're with one of our own colleagues Georgie, a permanent recruitment consultant at Anderson Hoare.

Favourite thing about the job: Meeting all the candidates and hearing their work journeys!
Least favourite: Inputting new candidates into the database…
Monday Up with the lark and in for 8am this morning to get the crème de la crème of CVs from the weekend. These are people who broadcast they are in the market for a new job and there’s Friday night, Saturday and Sunday’s CVs to filter through. Morning is then spent calling these people and seeing if they’d like to come in and register. We meet all our candidates before introducing them to our clients so we can get a real feel for who they are and what jobs would suit them. Lunchtime - team lunch from Itsu discussing the general weekend shenanigans! Also met a fantastic candidate who has completed over 10 years in The Royal Household and had some amazing stories to tell! Some afternoon discussion about our colleague Faye's upcoming wedding and what a successful weekend she had meeting the vicar and tackling more ‘wed-min’. We all feel very involved in her wedding as we found her wedding dress on a team trip to Barcelona so need a weekly update on planning progress!
Tuesday Meeting with a Financial Services client at 9am in the City to hear more about their upcoming restructuring and their executive support hires on the horizon. Great meeting and definitely some roles ahead which we can help with. Early afternoon is prime time for some business development: calling old clients to catch up and new clients to see if we can help with their executive support needs. Spend the rest of the afternoon working on roles discussing candidates with clients and managing expectations around the hiring process regarding speed and competition. Onto the second round of interviews for many candidates today! Hurrah! Left at 6.30pm to meet my boyfriend and family for dinner at Hoppers – an amazing Sri Lankan restaurant in Soho!
Wednesday In early to the office and got the heating cranked up -it’s so cold at the moment so I like to get in and make a big coffee for the warmth - and the caffeine! Permanent team weekly catch up first thing to discuss live jobs and share ideas on candidates. We’re really open with the way we work and always try to help each other out, these meetings help us ensure no stone has been left unturned for each position we’re working on. First team discussion of the day: The Pride of Britain Awards and how brilliant it was on the TV last night…. Who didn’t cry!? Busy day of candidates back-to-back - great candidates coming in thick and fast thanks to our fabulous Resourcer Lizzie doing a sterling job at booking people in! Managed to quickly dive out for lunch to have gel manicure in preparation for the weekend - and even sweeter with a £5 off from Treatwell - my favourite booking app!
Thursday Laughed out loud on the bus this morning to the podcast ‘Table Manners’ which involves the singer Jessie Ware and her mum having celebrities over for dinner... I now believe Sam Smith and I should be soulmates over our mutual love of Carrot Cake, Horlicks and Grandmothers who are feeders! Very rainy and dreary today but due to meet a great 8.30am candidate (whose CV was sent across to the client by 9.15am) - it was worth it! Pace in this job is key! An afternoon of more business development - had a few companies say they don’t use agencies but got another two meetings booked in for next week to introduce myself and our services! Ran 6.5km home to Wandsworth with the Nike app (which I love!) to get one burst of exercise in before the weekend! Popped into a friend’s house en route to drop something off, then cooked a noodle soup with a good hit of chilli to warm the cockles before bed!
Friday Meeting more candidates this morning and an offer on the table for one of the roles so we wait whilst the candidate considers the offer. This is followed by two hours of database uploading to ensure every candidate is on the database! (Not my favourite part of the role, but a necessity!) Last minute Temps desk booking comes in for Monday morning, so all hands on deck to call around our army of Temps to get it filled; success in 7 minutes! Call from the candidate around 2pm to accept the offer and a lovely placement to tie up the week with! Busy week complete! I have a ‘leave early’ so head off at 3pm to catch my train as I'm off to Sedburgh for a (very early) Thanksgiving party with friends living up there, pumpkin pie ‘n’ all!
