Phone interviews are extremely popular. Especially in this day and age. A phone interview has the potential to last just as long as a face-to-face meeting. You must be prepared! In shorter phone interviews, they may just be looking for an articulate manner and confidence. In longer interviews you’ll likely need to elaborate on personal experience and achievements.
Phone Interviews – How to Crush Them:
Be aware they can’t see you
Talking to someone on the phone means you won’t be able to see their facial expressions. So making jokes is a bit of a gamble. It’s best not to overdo the witticisms, which can get easily lost. Facial expressions are extremely important when you are talking to someone. Make sure you express your opinion and say what you think.
Let your personality shine through
Be yourself! Answer the phone with confidence and a smile. The interviewer will be able to hear your confidence in your voice. First impressions are everything. Maintain a consistent level of enthusiasm. This will be extremely effective as it will be able to show your personality. Take your time. It’s okay to say to them ‘let me think about that for a second’ if they are asking you a question. It’s better to think than to go straight into the question when you don’t know what to say. Thank them for taking the time to talk to you about the role. If you have their details send them a quick thank you email.
Speak clearly! There’s nothing worse when you have given a great answer to a question only to realise they couldn’t hear you. Whatever you say. It needs to be clear. Do not mumble! This will irritate the interviewer. Make sure to be in a quiet place. Away from traffic, people arguing and wind. You will concentrate a lot better when you are alone. If your using a mobile make sure it’s charged and you have signal. But if you can, you should use a landline.
