Everybody at one point in their life we had had bad interviews. Even the most confident impressive candidates won’t succeed in securing each role. Everybody will have a door shut in their face. It’s tough, it will bring you down.
It’s only with the lessons learnt from unsuccessful interviews that we can take a refreshed approach to job hunting.
Ask for feedback, we understand that comment might be hard to hear. Digest what they have to say. Think how you can turn those negatives into positives. How will you improve if you don’t ask what you did wrong!
Interviews: How to Deal with Negative Feedback
Don’t get defensive
It will be a massive blow to your confidence. Any candidate will find it difficult to deal with negative feedback after an interview. Especially if it doesn’t ring true in terms of how they see themselves.
Here at Anderson Hoare we have experienced candidates who become defensive. The client has simply made some observations about you during the hour they spent with you. It might be that they think you are too introverted to be client facing or that your lack of preparation meant they are wondering whether you really want the job. These are all things you can do something about, so don’t take it personally.
Learn from your mistakes
Take in the criticism! Think how you will change and grow. We’ve had candidates who started their job search with negative feedback. But because they took in the feedback. They learnt what they had to change and were willing to make the necessary tweaks. These candidates ended up getting a job they really wanted.
